Springfield Police: woman crashes car, leaves child alone in crashed car

By KSPR News

Springfield police are trying to find out how and why a two-year-old girl was left inside a crashed car.

Police say the two-year-old girl was abandoned after her mother drove through a construction site roadblock.

The child didn’t suffer any injuries and is now in the care of other family members.

Her mother, a 27-year-old Springfield woman, may face child endangerment charges for driving through a road block in an alley near 1112 E. Walnut St.

Police say she left her child inside the crashed car on Sunday.

A passerby found the child around 11:00 a.m.

Charlotte Hill walked by the car on her way into work at a law office.

Hill says, “My first thought was someone was driving down the road and didn't see the sign."

Hill says she saw the car tipping up in the air.

Hill thought no one was inside the car that plowed through the clearly marked road block and went inside.

"When I looked out my window and saw the fire fighter with the child my heart just dropped.” Hill said “If I would have looked inside the car I could have got the child out one hour to an hour an a half sooner."

Police aren't sure how long the 2 year girl was abandoned by her mother inside the car.

”The tail pipe and engine block were cool to the touch. Springfield Police Officer Grant Story said, “It appeared the child was there for sometime."

The child's body temperature rose to about 99 degrees that day but the girl didn't suffer any injuries.

Police say they found the woman walking near the scene.

They say once she was booked in jail on second degree child endangerment charges she told police she was the victim of a crime.

Police filed another report to look into the woman's claims that she was drugged and didn't mean to crash or leave her child behind.

"We are still looking into what caused the driver to do this.” Officer Story said, “Was she under the influence or was something else going on."

Hill says she wished she knew what was going on that day sooner.

"It just breaks your heart. All I can say is from this day on I will look."

Police are looking into to the evidence in this case which will likely include toxicology.

So far they say they don’t have any evidence that a crime was committed against the 27-year-old mother.

The woman has been released from jail.

Charges have not been filed.

Lets give a big round of applause to the Springfield Police department! They knew what she was on when they got her at the gas station earlier that night and they let her go anyways!!!! Shouldn't some of the blame be put on them as well?
