Arkansas measure would prohibit unmarried couples from adopting

By KSPR News

Supporters of an Arkansas Ballot Measure say they've gathered enough signatures to put the issue on the November ballot.

The Family Council Action Committee's proposal would ban unmarried couples living together from fostering or adopting children.

The proposal would effectively ban Gays and Lesbians from adopting or fostering children.

In 2006, The Arkansas Supreme court struck down a state policy specifically banning gays and lesbians from becoming foster parents.

Voters must recognize that the ballot measure prevents any and all unmarried couples living together from adopting or fostering, even if they are related to the child. Are you sure you want to stop a young grandmother from fostering her troubled child's baby, just because she's currently living with her boyfriend to save on rent? This is one of so many possible examples that show how this measure is unjust, regardless of your views about same-sex couples.

I signed the petition. As a parent, grandparent, former school counselor, I passionately believe it would be detrimental to children to be adopted or fostered by homosexual parents.

how sad that children who would get loving stable homes are denied by fundies who want everyone to live like them. The objection to Puritans is not that they try to make us think as they do, but that they try to make us do as they think. -H.L.Mencken
