MUST Uses Quizzes to Prevent Illegal Sharing

By Brad Belote

ROLLA, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri University of Science and
Technology in Rolla is using a time-honored tradition to reduce the number of students illegally sharing music or movies.

The students are required to take a six-question pop quiz on digital copyright law before they can access peer-to-peer software
that allows users to share music and movies online.

Since the policy began, the number of copyright complaints by the recording industry has dropped from 200 in 2006-07 to eight in the just-ended academic year.

Tim Doty, a campus systems security analyst, says the quiz gives students information they need before sharing music or movies.

Students who violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act can face costly settlements of several thousand dollars. So can
universities that fail to stop repeat offenders.
