The sales of trucks and SUV’s continue plummet with gas prices soaring towards four dollars.
According to an AP report, national truck and SUV sales for General Motors were down 27 percent compared to a year ago.
Ford and Chrysler reported similar drops.
“We got asked about horse power in the past and that's rarely asked about now,” says Keith Hyde, Internet Sales Manager with Marshfield Chevrolet.
With gas prices flowing towards four dollars, the need for speed and brawn has taken a backseat.
"They're asking first thing about fuel economy,” says Hyde.
And consumers seem to know exactly what they’re looking for with fuel economy and the magic number is 30 miles per gallon.
"You could have a car right beside it that gets 28 and nah, we want to look at the one that gets 30,” says Hyde.
Nationally, GM reported truck and SUV sales were down 27 percent compared to a year ago.
Ford and Chrysler reported similar trends.
"I was looking for a car that would pay for itself in gas savings,” says Danny Glor.
That means even loyal truck enthusiasts, like Glor, are now searching for smaller vehicles.
Glor purchased a car to drive to work.
"At $3.70 (a gallon for gas), it will be $150 a month in savings,” says Glor.
And dealerships have been forced to adjust their stock to meet consumers' changing needs.
"We don't have a huge inventory of SUV's,” says Hyde. “Cars, mostly cars.”
According to Hyde, overall sales at Marshfield Chevrolet are up.
He says they've hit record sales numbers.
However, GM reported overall sales dropped in April from a year ago by 16 percent.
