Tupperware Keeps Food and Christian County Woman Clean

By KSPR News
By Joanna Small

We all use it to keep our leftovers fresh, but for one local lady Tupperware saved her life.

And Monday she earned national recognition for her personal and professional achievements.

Bethany Brown has a troubled past, but she certainly has a promising future.

One that's gone from zero to sixty in just two short years, thanks to plastic containers and a lot of tenacity.

"I love Tupperware!!!"

And Tupperware loves Bethany Brown.

Last month alone the director and her team of nearly 70 salespeople around the region sold $20,000 worth of the air-tight containers.

Bethany’s efforts landed her behind the wheel of a brand new Pontiac G-6 convertible, presented by the president of Tupperware himself, who flew to Springfield from New York for the occasion.

But a glance in the rearview mirror reveals a past that seemed anything but promising.

“I was a full-blown drug addict,” Bethany explains.

Ten years of meth use and 22 arrests finally put Bethany in prison for six months in 2004.

She lost a 6 ½ year teaching career and time with her then 2-year-old son.

“I remember thinking as I parked the car, that last time, that last arrest, thinking this is it, this is over now. I finally relaxed; it was kind of a relief for me.” Bethany recalls.

“I can remember stretching out across the living room floor and crying out to god for her. I never gave up hope. I just knew someday she'd be off drugs,” Bethany’s mother Mary Cockroft tells KSPR.

With help from family, Bethany got clean.

After prison she moved back home with mom, dad, and Wesley to start over, but no one wanted to hire a felon.

“I just got in on a whim."

Anyone can sell Tupperware, but not everyone can sell it as well as Bethany.

“By the end of 30 days I was making more than $1,100 a month,” Bethany grins.

Now her monthly profits have more than tripled, and the prizes came in threes too.

She won a company car, a trip to Hawaii with her son, and now her very own vehicle- her first ever.

“I never knew how I could make it out of that lifestyle.”

Ironically, the little containers meant to keep food clean did the same for Bethany.

Bethany is one of less than 100 people to win a car by selling Tupperware.
