County Orders Scrap Metal Recycling Business Closed

By Brad Belote

The Springfield-Greene County Health Department has issued a Cease and Desist order against Springfield Iron and Metal for not having the proper permits.

People living near the business at 1323 W. Locust St. had complained about noise and fumes.

The company has been shredding scrap metal since February.

The Cease and Desist Order requires the business to shut down operations for at least 60 days. The health department will require the company to meet state air pollution standards before opening again.

If you love it so much, buy a house next to it. Put up with horrible smells, and loud booming noises all night long. I'm sure there will be lots of houses for sale, ones occupied long before the property was used for its present purposes, and you are welcome to purchase one and gush over the wonderfulness of your neighbor. I look forward to your future posts of how you love your new location and how moving there was the best thing you have ever done. And your property values will soar! Good luck

What the city is doing is stupid at best. This business as been here longer than the people complaining. So now it's right for us for us to hurt the economy more because it might smell bad. People will now obviously gripe because these men and women will be getting welfare and or unemployment. Make these neighbors pay it.

Fumes? Between the railroad, feed mill (relocated at the benefit of the city to this same area) highway traffic, and the removal of tons of cow manure from the stockyards that were previously on this property, how can you , make that rediculous claim? I find it strange as well that all of the other companies in town that handle the same material were open and booming when this company was shut down. Who is really behind this attack?

What permits exactly are they missing? This is a huge operation that has been years in planning supervised by the city on a regular basis from conception. They have helped bolster our economy by paying cash for junk that originally posed numerouse health threats including West Nile Virus. They have created jobs for employees and independents. Springfield Iron & Metal has brought a whole new and "profitable" jewel into the crown of the queen city. Has the city changed their mind or lost it?
