UPDATED: Child Rapist Death Penalty Dropped

By KSPR News

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Missouri House voted to permit death sentences for rape or sodomy of a child, but later decided to scrap the idea.

The provision was added by voice vote to a larger judiciary bill with many other amendments.

It would have allowed a death sentence for anyone convicted of rape or sodomy if the victim is less than 12 years old

House and Senate negotiators later decided to remove it from the bill.

Supporters said the death penalty provision would have given prosecutors another tool to combat criminals who target children.

Lawmakers have only until 6 p.m. Friday to pass legislation.
