JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri lawmakers have stripped new regulations on sexually oriented businesses from a bill that would repeal a controversial land-use law.
Legislators are seeking to undo a 2007 law that allows landowners to more easily incorporate their properties into villages - thus avoiding county planning or zoning regulations.
That law had been passed with the support of House Speaker Rod Jetton, who does not want to repeal it.
Jetton was successful Wednesday in urging colleagues to attach new restrictions on strip clubs to the bill repealing the village law.
But some senators filibustered the combined bill Thursday. That led House and Senate negotiators to remove the provisions on sexually oriented businesses, leaving only the village law repeal. Lawmakers have until Friday to pass bills.
