Arkansas Schools Consider 4 Day School Week

By KSPR News

Instead of going green or using more fuel efficient buses two Arkansas school districts may go a different route to save money and the environment.

The Mansfield and Hartford districts are considering cutting back classes from 5 days a week to 4.

Students aren't getting off that easy though. The adjusted schedule would make the school day longer.

The school districts are trying to balance future budgets.

They could either cut back on programs and staff or cut back the school week.

School officials say they could save anywhere from 10%-15% because they'll cut back on gas and electricity.

Why not keep the week 5 days: 3 at the physical school location and have older students be distance learners from home for two days?

It is amazing at how many of the people in America view education. It seems that most people who are against the 4 day school week are scared they will lose their free day of daycare. I know its hard to imagine that schools are designed to educate not babysit for many of you, but it certainly explains a lot for parent involvement. Many of you will try and defend your actions. Remember, excuses are like noses. Everyone has one and they all smell.

I think that it could be a very good idea for kids and administration. I work at a school and I think it really would benefit everyone. There would naturally be some kinks but the long term has to be considered. Everyone wants their child involved in all the programs and all of them cost money. If the school can't afford those any other way then I think it's a great solution. I'd rather my child go longer and then only worry about 1 day of daycare not 5.

Homework has been around since schools were created. Changing the amount of hours a kid goes to school and the amount of homework is not going to give the family more time together. Family time is a choice. Give up the TV and spend more quailty time doing things together. I am not a teacher but why do they always get the blame for families not having time with each other? It is because the parents do not want to take the blame for their mistakes. It is easier to blame than take the blame.

It might be a good idea if the kids weren't getting sent home with homework because kids don't get enough quality time with their parents as it is-with all the homework they have. Also, most parents workday exceeds a school day by a couple of hours anyway, so if the school district kept this in mind, and really worked on this to benefit more than just the budget, it just might work for the family unit, as well as the child's eduction.

Yes, Teachers and staff contract would need to be adjusted, but Parents would have a problem with day care and children home alone. I think this would be a perfect opportunity for local churhes to fill the need.

Yes, I think its a great idea. More free days for the kids, and will save money for the school district. If the parents work they can get a babysetter or send their children to daycare. They do not want to pay extra taxes to take up the slack so let them pay daycare. Although I dont think it should be city taxes raised cause alot lives out of city limits. I think the taxes should just be raised so much per child for parents only.

I think that a four day school day week is a very good idea. Not only will kids have more time to spend with their family, but at school, sense the school day will be extended, more individual attention will be possibe, also students will have more time to complete long tests.

It is a sad day when schools have to choose between educating kids properly and energy costs.

I teach in a school district near St. Louis, and our district has had several four-day weeks this school year. The students were off on the fifth day of the week, and it provided us a lot of good quality staff development time. I honestly feel like the students in my district are so involved in various activities, five days a week of real, quality instruction is almost too much for the typical student.
