As part of KSPR News’ week long series on Unclaimed Property in Missouri, Joe Daues set out to find real Ozarkers whose money is being held by the state of Missouri.
A private investigator from Midwest Intelligence helped us find a handful of people.
Then we went knocking on doors to find them and hopefully reunite them with their money.
First stop: Rogersville.
When we knocked on Joe's door he invited us into his home, which doubles as a music studio.
His living room looks like a recording studio, so we had to ask him to play.
Joe used to perform on Carnival cruise ships.
We told him the state had some of his unclaimed property.
Here's what he said:
“I hate money... I wish money didn't exist.”
Like it or not though, money pays the bills, so we convinced Joe to make the call to Jefferson City.
It turns out Alltell owed him a pretty good chunk of change.
“I don't care - I'm happy in life so it doesn't matter,” he said.
That was a couple of weeks ago.
The claim form is still on his desk at home.
We're not disclosing the exact amount or Joe’s last name because that's confidential.

Go to missingmoney.com and you can search your name for free, you should never pay someone to recover funds from the state.

I feel that this is poor journalism to encourage people to come to this website, only to find that you have the option of shelling out $11.00 to have this researched for you. If the State of Missouri has a department that does the investigation of all these data bases, why do us taxpayers have to pay to find money that is already rightfully ours in the first place. What is the number to call Jeff. City? Is there a website that doesn't require your credit card number? Good questions, eh?
