Flooding Causes Gamut of Problems

By Michelle Sherwood

The Missouri Water Patrol is issuing a safety warning after one person died and another had serious injuries from adjusting their dock cables.

High water from flooding is creating dangerous conditions for dock owners these days. The danger comes from releasing the break on the winch that secures a cable to the dock. Extreme pressure on the winch can cause the handle to strike back and hit the person trying to make the adjustment.

The people at the State Park Marina at Table Rock Lake say one safety tip is to never mess with the dock cables alone.

The Water Patrol says always there are more safety tips to follow. Always wear a lifejacket, and check the tension on the winch before releasing the brake. If it's too tight, contact a dock service company.

Flooding will also be a problem for people, who want to spend the summer at Table Rock Lake.

Taney County Emergency Management officials say some recreation areas may not re-open until July or August and others may be closed all summer. The Army Corps of Engineers' boat ramps and beaches are closed right now, and only a few campsites are open. Decisions about what parts of the lake can reopen will be made before Memorial Day.

Taney County officials are also recommending that homeowners delay rebuilding for the time being. The concern is that more rain will be on the way because it’s the rainy season.

Emergency Management officials say the Army Corp of Engineers will do their best to minimize flooding, but if we get more rain, they might have to release more water. They're also encouraging people to get a tetanus shot and have their homes inspected for mold.

We really wish you would stop all the BAD publicity! It is killing us here! We are open for business! Our cabins are unaffected & the ones that are coming are enjoying themselves!

With all we have heard about campgrounds being overwhelmed with flood water we must be one of the few experiencing no problems. All our full hook up and tent sites are open, our boat ramp is open and we are offering a shuttle to out dock which is otherwise fully functional. Spring fishing has been great in our area and we look forward to a wonderful spring and summer. Come on down and enjoy our beautiful lake.

I am running into the same problem with cancellations, we have had many. The fish don't know the lake is above normal levels! The fishing is good, the resorts are fine, if the docks are too far out into the water the resort owners have been shuttling people to the docks. Too bad all this negitaive press is hurting many of the business people in the area. The lake looks beautiful with the high water, and the Redbuds and Dogwood in bloom all around the lake.

With all of the negative news about the high water around the lake, I am getting tons of calls from customers wanting to cancel their reservations assuming that we must have suffered damage like what they see on TV and read in the paper. We had a full house of tournament fishermen this weekend and none got their feet wet walking to my dock and nobody had a problem launching their boat where my concrete launch ramp used to be. Lots of fish were caught and the weather was wonderful.Cabins R great
