Buffalo sustains heavy damage from possible tornado

By Josh deBerge

Tornadoes ripped through several Ozark towns today. The hardest hit appears to be Buffalo in Dallas County, where some people now have no home.

What came through Buffalo, came through quickly.

"It was just so quick. We didn't have time to react because had it all planned out. We were going to dive for the bathroom," says Mary Lee White.

In a matter of minutes, what most likely was a tornado slammed into the western edge of town. It tore off roofs.

Scattered debris and forced some residents to pick up pieces of what used to be their homes.

At the school in Buffalo a tense hour.

"Eighth hour we all had to go to the hallways. We had to duck down and cover our heads in the lockers. We were there all eighth hour," said Brad Lewis.

The force of the wind was so powerful it drove this 2 by 6 through this wall.

"This is obviously a board through the house. I think, I don't even think this came from her house, it came from another structure. But the damage outside was much greater. The board in that wall came from the rest of her neighborhood," said Lajeana Lackey.

One woman survived the storm sitting in a recliner, with little left of the walls and roof that once surrounded her.

Several dozen houses were damaged, some destroyed, but the tornado affected only a few.

"It was a very narrow path. The guy across the street didn't even have any damage," said Dan Graves.

A command center has been setup in front of Wood's supermarket and search and rescue operations ended earlier this evening. Thankfully, injuries were only minor. Tuesday, the clean-up effort will begin in earnest and no doubt, many will be assessing the damage.

We should note that there was no tornado warning in effect for the storm that hit Dallas County and sirens did not sound.

National weather service officials will confirm Tuesday whether a tornado actually did move through Buffalo.
