Spring Rise adds to already full Missouri River

By KSPR News

Tuesday night the Army Corps of Engineers started adding more water to the Missouri river as part of its spring rise program, despite efforts from Missouri lawmakers to stop them.

The Corps increased the flow through Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota in order to encourage spawning of the endangered pallid sturgeon.

The sturgeons need deeper water to reproduce.
The corps said a small pulse of 4-5 inches of water will make its way down the Missouri river over the next several days.

But Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon sued the Corps saying the rise would cause additional flooding on the lower sections of the Missouri river in the eastern part of the state.
