Red Cross Helping Flood Victims

By KSPR News

"It didn't hit me until all the kids are asleep and I watch them sleep and I think they don't have a bedroom anymore,” says Stone County flood victim Patricia McGuire.

McGuire and her kids do have a place to sleep even after their house was almost swept away.
Now they're sleeping in the Super 8 Motel in Nixa, paid for by the American Red Cross.

"They have us in here and I have her name to call her if I need anything at all,” says McGuire.

The woman McGuire can call is Teresa Marquart, a Red Cross Case Worker.
Marquart has helped the McGuire’s get the basics like food, clothes and of course shelter after this weeks flooding.

"While they're in that place they're able to focus on rebuilding and what their long term plans will be,” says Marquart.

While both the McGuire’s house and lives have been turned on its side, with the help of the Red Cross, the family is trying to live its life like this disaster never happened.

"That just helps with the whole stress level and dealing with that,” says Marquart.
"We're going back to Hooten Town tomorrow and we'll have an Easter egg hunt,” says McGuire. “You know, to get in the grove of things."

But, it wasn't just the things the McGuire’s received that helped them out.

"She mainly gave us good spirits to keep us going and that meant a lot,” says McGuire.

The Red Cross service center in Galena is closed. But if you call the Red Cross, a disaster action team will assess your damage and determine how much help you can receive.
