Power is On for Springfield Apartment Renters

By KSPR News

In a story KSPR broke Wednesday at 10:00, tenants at a Springfield apartment building have been worried about being left in the cold because their landlord hasn't been paying her City Utilities bill.

There’s some good news tonight for those people. A CU spokesman tells KSPR News the landlord has struck a deal to pay some of her utility bill.

CU says the bill is "severely delinquent," but the utility company will keep the power and heat on ... for now.

The landlord is well-known to many people in Springfield. Her name is Becky Spence and just a few months ago, she was making a pitch to build a luxury high-rise hotel in Jordan Valley Park.

Records obtained by KSPR News show Spence’s business, Elite Properties, owns the apartment building in the 700 block of South Campbell.

KSPR has tried to reach Spence for comment on the story leaving messages on her business phone, her cell phone and on her e-mail account.

We stopped by her office on South Avenue and were told that Spence has been in a meeting for a week.

So far no response from Becky Spence on why cu almost cut off heat at her apartment building.

We do want to thank those of you who called and wrote about your concerns for those who live in the Campbell Avenue apartments.

One viewer offered to put up $100 to help pay the bill and keep the heat and lights on.

I think that she falls in the same section as a SLUM LANDLORD and she should have charges filed against her. MAYBE SHE SHOULD BE FORCED TO LIVE LIKE SHE HAS THE TENANTS LIVING....

It is outrageous that she would be in a position to build something else, yet not pay the agreed utilities for these tenants. She shouldn’t be allowed permits for anything until she cares for what she already has. If a tenant must use the stove to supplement the heater, there is a dangerous problem. In place of jail or fines, she should be made to live in her own apartment while she pays the difference in rent for one of her renters to live some place suitable until repairs/upgrades are made.

I think she needs to pay the utilities and spend some time in jail. I also think that the tenants should be able to live there without pay for all the stress that she has caused

Is sad went a landlord can put thier tenants in danger. I think they need to fine her or put in jail. Because if the tenants didn't paid their bills they would be fine or homeless. And if they in danger some one they would have to go jail or something.
