Four Kids Found Dead, Four Others Missing

By KSPR News

Crews are searching along Alabama’s gulf coast for the bodies of four children.

It’s believed their father threw them off an 80 foot high bridge after an argument with his wife.

The children range in age from four months to three years.

A prosecutor has charged the father with four counts of capital murder after allegedly confessing.

And in Washington, DC, a woman faces murder charges after U.S. Marshals found decomposing bodies of four girls in her apartment.

She’s believed to be the mother.

The kids range in age from 5 to 17.

A medical examiner believes the bodies had been in the apartment for more than two weeks.

To explain a little, many state have “safe haven” laws, including Missouri. These laws basically say a parent can bring a baby to a hospital, fire department, or police department and leave the child there.

Each state is different on how old the child can be. In Missouri and Arkansas they have to be 30 days or younger; in North Dakota they child can be up to a year old.

So we want to know what you think. Are “safe haven” laws a good idea? Text or email your thoughts to news@kspr.com. You can also comment below. Stay tuned to KSPR News at 4:30 and 10:00 for your Talk Backs.

If the children can truly be given a safe haven this sounds like a necessity. If a parent is unfit and knows it, many of these grisly tragedies could be avoided. However, I also know that our laws concerning foster care often allow children to go from frying pan to fire. Obviously, it isn't really a "safe haven" unless they can truly be given a safe and loving home. Hope the law allows for the parents to seek some kind of help as well. Many of them must be "walking wounded."

YES!! Safe Haven laws should extend to all children if they are not safe with the parents/guardians/caregivers who else is going to help protect them? I think children are a gift from GOD why are so many people wanting to give them back so quickly?

I agree. All children regardless of age deserve to be safe. I think the 'safe haven' law needs to be expanded to include all children.

yes i think that any child of any age should be counted in on the " safe haven" law. also if the child is able to turn his or herself in , thinking they are un safe, so be it.

The laws need to be explanded because there are alot of older children who are injuried and killed and they deserve to be safe also..
