Springfield Celebrates Recycling Day

The City’s Solid Waste Management Division, joined by a number of the City’s recycling partners, will celebrate America Recycles Day with events on Thursday, Nov. 15 (America Recycles Day) and Saturday, Nov. l7, 2007.

An Open House will take place at the Lone Pine Recycling Center from l0 a.m. until 2 p.m. on America Recycles Day, Thursday, Nov. 15. Refreshments and door prizes will be a part of the “Thank You for Recycling” theme.

On Saturday, Nov. 17, a special Saturday “E-Waste” collection event will take place at the Computer Recycling Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Computer Recycling Center accepts microwaves, computers, VCRs, camcorders, TVs, cell phones and other electronics items. A processing fee of $20 will apply only to TVs. Other items are accepted at no charge.

Partnering with the Urban Neighborhoods Alliance and the Community Partnership of the Ozarks, the City’s Solid Waste Management Division and the Planning and Development Department will sponsor a Waste Tire Collection event at the Missouri Entertainment and Event Center (formerly Ozark Empire Fairgrounds).

Tires will be accepted at no charge from residents and neighborhood groups of the City of Springfield from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17. Waste tires from businesses will not be accepted. An ID with proof of city residency may be required. Funding for the event is provided through reimbursement by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources from funds generated by the Waste Tire Fee. Springfield City Council provided a short-term loan to make the event possible.

Citizens also are encouraged to visit the National Recycling Coalition’s Web site and “take the pledge”: “A pledge to come together and recycle better, because it’s easier to make a difference now more than ever.”

The City’s voter-approved Integrated Solid Waste Management System includes:

Household Chemical Collection Center

Recycling Centers

Education and Information Program

Market Development Program

Yardwaste Recycling Center

Springfield Sanitary Landfill

Curbside Recycling (provided by private waste haulers)

This year’s activities will celebrate nearly 15 years of continuous service provided by the ISWMS to the citizens of Springfield and Greene County. The event also will recognize and applaud partners whose long-term commitment to waste reduction and recycling programs make the City’s recycling programs more sustainable and stable.
