Jury Awards Nearly $11 Million Against Westboro Baptist

By KSPR News

The anti-gay group from Topeka that protests military funerals is now having to pay up.

A jury in Baltimore ordered Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church to pay $11 million dollars to the father of a Marine who was killed in Iraq.

Albert Snyder sued the church after its members protested the funeral of his son, Matthew.

The church, led by Fred Phelps, protests military funerals because they say the Iraq war is punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.

The defense says it will appeal.
