Porter Wagoner Dead at 80

By KSPR News

Porter Wagoner has died. He was 80. Wagoner was a rhinestone-clad Grand Ole Opry star who helped launch the career of Dolly Parton by hiring her as his duet partner.

Porter Wayne Wagoner was born August 12, 1927 in West Plains, Missouri. While working in a butcher shop on the town square, Wagoner sang and read commercials on a 15-minute early morning radio show. He later moved to Springfield to work for KWTO radio.

In 1954, Porter became a part of the “Ozark Jubilee” television program, and on February 23, 1957 he joined the “Grand Ole Opry” where he remains one of its most popular stars.

In May, he celebrated his 50th year in the Opry and signed his
first record contract in years. His new CD "Wagonmaster" earned
some of his best reviews. Over the summer he opened for the rock
duo White Stripes at a sold-out concert at New York's Madison
Square Garden where he was touched by the reaction of the young
audience.
