Springfield police look for good description of car involved in 2 drive-by shootings

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Two drive-by shootings on Monday afternoon are under investigation in north Springfield.  They may be related.

City police first taped off an area around two duplexes near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue at Dale Street.  People in the area report several shots were fired, maybe as many as 10 or 11, by someone in a car that sped away after the shooting about 1:15.

The bullets hit two duplexes and one vehicle.  One block of Dale Street was closed to traffic during the investigation.

Springfield Police Sgt. Tom Royal says the white sedan had several people inside it.  Royal said witnesses gave police conflicting statements about their race and the number of occupants.

A reporter talked to people in the area, but no one said they know of any reason for the shooting.

"We haven't had anyone tell us of a possible motive," said Royal.

About 30 minutes after that first shooting, another drive-by shooting was reported near Frisco Avenue at Calhoun Street, east of Drury University and north of Ozarks Technical Community College, one and a half miles from the location of the first shooting.

Springfield Police Lt. Ben King says the description of the car from which the shots were fired at the second scene sounded similar to the first shooting.

"A white, four-door sedan," said King.  "It sounds similar to the first shooting, but we still have no good description of the people inside the vehicle."

A resident of the area near Calhoun at Frisco told a reporter that his wife heard two shots.  Police say they haven't found any bullet holes at the second scene.

"We have no evidence of an impaction there." said King.
