Three murder suspects in Laclede County

Three murder suspects in Laclede County (September 21, 2012)

VERSAILLES, Mo. -- A jury found Steven Pyykola guilty on Friday afternoon for a killing spree resulting from a domestic dispute in Laclede County three years ago.  A judge scheduled sentencing for Nov. 15 for the man from Springfield for three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of armed criminal action.

Prosecutors and investigators say Pyykola, 21, and three others plotted and prepared for two weeks and then killed Miranda Smith’s boyfriend, father and stepmother in October 2009.  Prosecutors told the jury here, where the case was moved from Laclede County, that Pyykola is the one who fired the fatal shots.  The trial lasted all week.

Officers found the bodies of Jeffrey Smith, 51, and Glenda Smith, 48, in their home near Phillipsburg. They found the body of Zack Porter, 24, of Elkland in Miranda Smith’s apartment in Lebanon.

Two other men, Josh Reyes and Jacky Wong, pleaded guilty. Reyes is serving a life prison sentence without chance of parole.  Wong is scheduled for sentencing on Dec. 3.  Benjamin Stidham’s case is pending in Camden County, where it was moved to try to ensure a fair outcome.

Joshua Reyes was an ex-boyfriend of Miranda Smith.  She and Reyes had two children together.

Investigators said the group planned to kill two other people, an aunt and uncle of Miranda Smith, but couldn't find their home north of Lebanon on the night of the murders.
