ELDON, Mo. -- Four men and a baby are hurt following a massive fire at an apartment complex in Miller County. It happened Saturday night near Eldon just off of U.S. 54. Three firefighters, a man, and a baby are all recovering from injuries of varying degrees.
There were some nervous moments for family and friends who lived in the four-unit apartment complex on Doyle Road
"I was thinking that a lot of kids were in the flames and stuff, begging for help," said Tiffany Roberts, 13, who witnessed the blaze.
The fire spread quickly and left behind nothing but charred wooden supports and blown-out windows.
"You could see the fire through the woods and the smoke was really deep and black," said Blake Roberts, 12.
Blake and his sister, Tiffany, were some of the first to see the flames. They ran to tell their mom.
"It is pretty scary, especially when you got kids coming in and hollering at you. 'Mom, mom, everything is on fire up there,'" said Luana Woodruff.
The roof of the building collapsed, landing on top of three firefighters.
"You have seen bonfires and everything, but nothing as big as that," said Woodruff.
Fear then took over. Their family members were inside the burning complex.
"I was so scared. I was afraid that my cousin was in that fire," Tiffany said.
Their uncle and cousin were able to get out unharmed. that is not the case for a man and baby living inside one apartment. They were both taken to the hospital in Osage Beach.
"There is a lot of people down here that know a lot of people up there and, when it comes to kids, everybody is worried about kids," said Woodruff.
On Sunday, the condition of the baby was unclear. One firefighter was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was treated and released.
An initial investigation into the cause of the fire turned up empty. As of now, it has been ruled undetermined. Investigators say they do not suspect foul play.
Officals had not yet released the names of the victims, as of Sunday.
