Robert Nelson, 51, was officially charged with open murder Wednesday in Calhoun County District Court for allegedly beating to death John George, 51, of Sharon Road in Pennfield Twp., according to court records.
FOX 17 received the 911 tapes which include calls from people claiming to be the suspect’s mother and the suspect.
“I have a gentleman upstairs in my apartment his name is Robert Nelson. He just told me that he had hit a guy named John George in the head with a baseball bat. John George lives on Sharon Avenue, I think its 116 Sharon. “A caller at Silver Star Apartments told a dispatcher.
The caller continued to state that he did not want to go back into the apartment because there were knives in the drawers.
At the same time, police were on their way. Nelson barricaded himself in the apartment, even calling 911 on himself.
“Uh, hey. Th…th… these police that are out here, uh, after me. Can um you connect me to one of ‘em?” Nelson asked the dispatcher. “The safety for these police let me; let me talk to one of ‘em.” Nelson persisted.
Nelson admitted to the dispatcher that he had been drinking, but told the 911 employee it didn’t matter how much when she asked.
Soon, dispatchers received a call from Nelson’s mother who lived in Jackson, Mich.
“He just told me that he had hit him in the head with a ball bat and later he went back and he was dead.” The woman who claimed to be his mother said.
Nelson would hang up on dispatch and call them back, continuously making threats to the officers outside, records show.
“If they bust through the door I’m shooting ‘em!” Nelson exclaimed on the phone.
Despite his anger toward authorities, Nelson was taken into custody peacefully. His mother told dispatchers that her son has been troubled most of his life.
Police said that Nelson and George formerly lived together.
Nelson is being held without bond, according to Calhoun County District Court records.
