New Construction Centers on Being Green

By Brad Belote

Matt O’Reilly was probably the type of kid who cut holes in the plastic rings that came on a six-pack of soda.

"The concept really is to preserve the playground. Environmentalism protects our natural areas, protects wildlife areas, protects forest, protects planet and that's where we like to play," said Matt O’Reilly of Green Circle Shopping Center.

And playing outdoors is exactly the idea behind his Springfield store Dynamic Earth.

But one outdoor store wasn't enough.

The O’Reillys wanted to expand their passion for the environment and that took them to the future home of the first low impact development in southwest Missouri.

"In looking at a new building, you open a whole can of worms. We said we've got to do this green if we're going to do it. If an outdoor store doesn't do it, who's going to?," O’Reilly said.

That question finally prompted O’Reilly and his sister to take action. The two finalized plans on the "Green Circle Shopping Center", which will include dynamic earth, a pilates studio, a natural foods store and a San Francisco Oven restaurant, all with environmentally innovations.

"it's not just a novel, neat thing to do. It's actually financially attainable and makes business sense to do that," O’Reilly said.

Aside from the green roof with deck seating, the shopping center will be lined with pervious pavement, have efficient bathroom fixtures, as well as a geo-thermal heating system and echo-friendly storm-draining.

O’Reilly says while this project might not save a ton of money, it's more about setting an example.

"We're really taking green circle as far as we can to make it a show piece for every bit of green building and what can be done."

After all he says, we should live up to our name.

"We do live in Greene County, maybe there's a bit of irony there. People are realizing they can do it and it's not impossible to attain," O’Reilly said.

Green Circle Shopping Center is going in near the intersection of National and Republic. O’Reilly expects it to open this November.
