"The Road"
Based on Cormac McCarthy's novel of the same name, this 2009 film follows a father (Viggo Mortensen) and son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where cannibals reign and those left behind try to maintain shards of their humanity. As the nameless characters travel southbound across the barren landscape of the United States in hopes of warmer temperatures, the father places all of his energy in ensuring his son's survival and preparing him for life in this dangerous era alone. Mortensen's portrayal is mesmerizing. If the book was painful to read, seeing the movie is that much worse. |
