Nurturing Individuality

By KSPR NEWS

Rachel Moore – Age 15 says, “These are just some pictures… of things I like, tea sets… there’s one at the bottom.”

15-year-old Rachel Moore, like all of us, has her favorite things. Rachel’s parents are encouraging each of their kids to express their individuality by making personal banners.

Kevin Moore – Father of 4 says, “It’s kind of like family crest, a family crest says this is who we are, this is where we came from, this is our identity.”

Julia Moore – Mother of 4 says, “One will have horses, one will have teacups, one will have computers, and one will have a lot of pink… it’ll be interesting to see, yeah.”

The banner project is a lot more than just a craft. Now that the kids are older, the Moore family is nurturing each child’s personal creativity.

Julia says, “When the children were little we just moved like a herd of sheep, and then at one point… we had to start treating them as individuals and not just four kids moving all in one direction.”

Kevin says, “It’s our job as parents to help them get from point a to point b… that we teach them and show them that they are valuable and they are important and they can succeed.”

There are many ways you can cultivate individuality. A creative project like making banners is great, but one on one time is important as well, let your child choose a special activity that encourages interaction and conversation. With three daughters, Kevin often finds himself on a shopping expedition!

Kevin says, “Anything that would lead them into talking with you. Walking through the mall I call it sightseeing, looking at every piece of clothing in the mall is great, because it’s one on one time.”
