Ozarkers Celebrate Oscar Night America

By Brad Belote

A few hundred Ozarkers watched the Academy Awards Sunday night with all the glitz and glamor of a Hollywood premiere.

The Gillioz Theatre hosted Oscar Night America, one of only 52 Oscar watch parties officially endorsed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Springfield beat out more than 500 other communities who had applied to host such an event.

Joe and Christine Daues emceed the event. Kirk Elmquist of the Springfield Cardinals came as a Oscar-turned-human. Tom Whitlock, a Springfield native, brought his Academy Award for display. He won in 1987 for writing the Best Song from "Top Gun."
