Pictures: Baltimore Farmers' Market: Week Three report
Week Three at the Baltimore Farmers' Market and Bazaar brought back the vendors -- and crowds -- that had stayed away on Easter Sunday. Summer-like weather helped. Asparagus, which had been spotted sporadically the first two weeks, made something of a breakthrough. But it was hyacinths that stole the show. The soft-shell crab guy hasn't shown up yet but is expected next week.

Hyacinths: The official scent of mid-April
It was the perfume of hyacinths you could smell clear across the oval on Sunday, as though someone had dropped a few gallons of high-end laundry softener on the asphalt. The Breidenbaugh Farms stall had scads of them in pink, white and purple. Just what do you do with hyacinths once you buy them? Tune into Midday on WYPR on Monday at noon for "Advice for the Maryland Gardener." Garden enthusiast and Baltimore Sun columnist Susan Reimer will be talking about what it takes to start, restore or improve a garden. You can call in to ask her about hyacinths.
