"No Country" Cleans Up

By Brad Belote

In a year when Oscar held its breath to see if there would actually be an Academy Awards ceremony, there were few surprises Sunday night.

"No Country for Old Men" was the bigger. The thriller based on the book by Cormac McCarthy won Best Picture and earned directors Ethan & Joel Coen top honors for directing and adapting the book for the screen. Javier Bardem also won for Best Supporting Actor for his chilling performance in the film.

Daniel Day-Lewis won his second Oscar for Best Actor. Day-Lewis was the strong favorite for his gripping turn as an oil tycoon in "There Will be Blood." Day-Lewis previously won in 1990 for "My Left Foot."

The only questions going into the night were on the actress side. Tilda Swinton edged sentimental favorite Ruby Dee in Best Supporting Actress. Swinton played a cool, calculating executive in "Michael Clayton."

Marion Cotillard won top honors for "La Vie en Rose."
