A man was shot and wounded by a Baltimore police officer in West Baltimore on Tuesday morning.
Lt. Col. Garnell Green, the commander of the homicide section, said police were called to the 1200 block of Oakhurst Place, in the Southwestern Police district, about 9 a.m. for a report of a "man suffering from a mental illness armed with a weapon."
Green said the officer discharged his weapon, but the victim's injuries were initially unclear. Green said at the hospital, a bullet was removed from the man's abdomen and detectives began investigating the case as a police shooting.
It was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting. Green said two knives were recovered from the scene, but the officer who discharged his weapon had not yet given a statement and detectives were trying to piece together an account from witnesses.
The city fire union, through its Twitter account, said the victim was a 38-year-old man. Green said he was listed in "good" condition.
The officer was also not identified pending the department's policy of waiting 48 hours to identify officers involved in shootings, but Green said the officer was on routine suspension pending the investigation.
It's the third shooting by city police officers since March 27. The prior incidents were both fatal.
