About 160 students and art teachers from the Dakotas attended the Granary/Dacotah Prairie Museum All Dakota Fine Arts High School Exhibition April 26 and 27.
Mitchell architect Brad Ciavarella served as the keynote speaker for the event at the Aberdeen Recreational and Cultural Center. He encouraged the students to see art in the ordinary and incorporate those impressions into their personal art.
Art workshops included Large Scale Painted Image with Aberdeen artists Nick and Nicole Fischer, Indispensable Drawing Methods with Aberdeen artist Jacob Bosmoe, Encaustic Painting with Tim Steele from South Dakota State University and Innovative Photo Art with Jennifer Deutsch from Aberdeen.
Each school team consisted of six students who each entered one piece of original art in the exhibition and competition. South Dakota schools that participated were Aberdeen Central, Aberdeen Roncalli, Groton, Britton-Hecla, Frederick Area, Ipswich, Willow Lake, De Smet, Mitchell, Clark, Holgate and Simmons middle schools of Aberdeen, Wessington Springs, Northwestern, Sisseton, Tea Area and Mobridge-Pollock.
North Dakota schools taking part were Fargo North, Milnor and Lisbon.
The day-long workshops included a session with the two professional artists who served as judges for the competition: Vicki Jo Bogart of Fargo, N.D., and Greg Blair of Aberdeen. These judges evaluated the entries and awarded a prize in each of 10 artistic media categories.
In addition, one team of students from North Dakota and South Dakota was chosen as the outstanding state team.
Morghan Deiss of Aberdeen Central was honored with Best of Show. She received a commendation and a $500 cash award.
Rachel Diede earned the Judges' Choice in oil/acrylic/watercolor painting. She also received the Students' Choice in oil/acrylic/watercolor painting for the second day of the exhibition.
Both days, participating students served as peer judges, selecting their favorites in each of the 10 categories.
