Police capture man suspected of robbing truck stop with a gun

MONETT, Mo. A Monett man who is accused of robbing a truck stop is in jail after weeks of being on the run.

Police said Jason Withnell robbed a truck stop in south Monett in February.

Employees were able to identify him and police tracked him down Friday.

"To anybody that thinks it's a joke, it's not a joke. It can happen to anybody. She just happened to be the one that was here that night,” said victim’s boyfriend, Richard Morgan.

As Morgan is hard at work, his girlfriend is recovering at home after police said Jason Withnell threatened her with a gun and then robbed the cash register last month.

"It ain't her fault. She did exactly what she had to do. I don't have no problems with what she did. To me i'm proud of her, she did the right thing," Morgan stated.

Another cashier, Kami Nash, said she has heard people talking about robbing her work.

"I never take anybody seriously because I've heard a lot of people say it. I was like okay. Don't do it on my shift,” Nash said.

She knows Withnell and said his mom is sick.

"I'm disappointed. I didn't think he was actually going to do it. I was really hoping he wouldn't do it because he can do better. He's more than capable of making his way with the things that he does," Nash said.

She said he is a magician. But Morgan does not care what he is.

"If you ask me, he's got a pretty good set on him to come in here in that time of night 'cause you never know... At any given moment we can have someone in here," Morgan said.

According to online court records, Withnell's criminal past includes domestic assault, creating substantial risk of injury/death, and resisting arrest.

Morgan says he just wishes Withnell, the man accused of threatening his girlfriend with a gun, left her alone. Morgan says the crime still haunts her.

"She's strong. She'll come through it. It might take a little, but she'll come through it. I'll make sure of that," Morgan finished.

Morgan says several customers were inside the store when it was robbed. Luckily, no one was hurt.

Withnell is in the Barry County Jail accused of robbery, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. All are felony charges.
