Police seal off Springfield neighborhood after man claimed he had an explosive device

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Springfield police closed off part of Division Street Wednesday evening, after getting a call that a suicidal man may have a firearm and some type of explosive device.

Lt. Chad McIntyre says the man's relatives called police after he said he was armed. Everyone else in the house along west Division made it out safely and police surrounded the structure. They closed Division where it meets Commercial Street and brought in the city's bomb squad.

The man surrendered peacefully about 5:15 p.m. McIntyre says he did not have any weapons or explosive devices.

Because of his suicidal threats, McIntyre says the man was taken to the hospital for observation.

A neighbor tells us the man was under a lot of stress and that this was his way of reaching out for help.
