Code Red Alert: Blood Donations Needed

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. In a move saved only for rare instances, the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks on Monday issued a Code Red Emergency Alert for all blood types.

The alert means there's less than a one day supply of blood for some 40 hospitals.

"It's so much worse this year than in past years. You've go a bunch of donors that are willing to give, but they're just not feeling up to it," explained Chris Pilgrim, the agency's medial relations representative.

The flu season has left too many seats for giving blood, empty. At the same time, the recent icy weather prompted blood drives to be called off, including two sizable ones on Monday, alone.

"Republic High School and Kickapoo High School both cancelled drives. It represents about 200 donations that was a big chunk of our day today Pilgrim said.

In January, blood donations dropped by more than 500 units while local hospitals needed much more, prompting chronic shortages throughout most of the past month.

There are four CBCO Donor Centers in the Ozarks.
