Arkansas Sen. John Boozman to have follow-up heart surgery

WASHINGTON Arkansas U.S. Senator John Boozman will have heart surgery on Tuesday.

It’s a follow-up procedure to surgery he had to repair a tear in his aorta in 2014. Boozman said about 30 percent of patients who have this kind of procedure done will require additional surgery.

“My doctors have been monitoring me since the surgery. After consulting with my doctors, I have elected to go ahead and have this done during the August recess so I will be ready to go when the Senate comes back into session in September,” Boozman said in an emailed statement.

Boozman, 66, is in his second term in the U.S. Senate after serving five terms in the House.

The surgery will take place at a hospital in the Washington, D.C. area.
