OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- A massive fire spread from an apartment complex to several nearby homes. The fire started around 4 p.m. Monday in this suburb of Kansas City.
Parts of the multi-million dollar City Place development were under construction. It is now rubble. Embers spread from the big fire, setting area homes on fire. Some homeowners tried to fight the fires with garden hoses.
There are no reports of injuries. Firefighters evacuated several people from their homes as a precaution.
Flames and heavy black smoke poured from the multi-story apartment building. The fire appeared to be coming from two buildings under construction at the development and within minutes began to spread to nearby houses.
Authorities say at least six other fires were reported at nearby homes.
Neighboring fire departments are helping the Overland Park Fire Department battle the fires.
