Meet KY3 Chief Meteorologist Ron Hearst.
Weather has been a lifelong passion. The son of an Air Force lieutenant colonel, he traveled around the world as a youngster and was exposed to all kinds of weather, including hurricanes and blizzards. His interest led him to obtain a B.S. degree in Meteorology from Saint Louis University in 1984.
Even before getting his degree, Ron knew weather was what he wanted to do. His first job was as a licensed weather observer at Southern Illinois Airport in Carbondale. During college, he was exposed to the world of private meteorology while working for Weather Corporation of America.
Ron’s television career began at WSIL-TV in Harrisburg, Ill., in 1984. The challenge of being the first meteorologist at the new Springfield ABC affiliate drew him to KSPR in the fall of 1986. Upon leaving KSPR in 1991, Ron had brief stints at KJRH in Tulsa and KMOV in St. Louis before returning to Springfield at KY3 in 1993.
One of the many exciting career opportunities was flying into Hurricane Ivan with the Hurricane Hunters in 2005. He has also served on the American Meteorological Society’s Board of Broadcast Meteorology and has the AMS Television Seal of Approval.
Ron has also won many awards for his work including several Missouri Broadcasters Association awards for Best Weathercast and the AMS award for Outstanding Service by a Broadcast Meteorologist for coverage of the Stockton and Pierce City tornadoes in 2003.
Ron is happily married to Gay Lynn Hearst and has two stepchildren, Miles and Malyn. He enjoys outdoor activities especially triathlons. Hobbies include astronomy and gardening, especially raising his award-winning raspberries.
